But something about each potential princess seems inauthentic. In the fable, a prince searches around the world for a true princess to be his bride. In ZeroTheology John Tucker creates a similar analogy, based on an old tale told by Hans Christian Andersen. He compares doubt to the “scraping of the paint from the glass” and laments that many religious people resist doubt and “confuse faith with clinging to certain ideas.” But beliefs are like blue paint that people decide to apply to the window glass to be sure it will always be the color they wish it to be. Faith is like looking at the sky through a clear or open window, he says, with an openness to accepting it as it is: blue or gray, light or dark, starry or sunny, rainy or fair. ![]() įor Watts, then, while faith is unreserved openness to the truth-a refusal to reduce truth to what we already understand, beliefs are ideas we cling to because we wish they were true or want them to be true. In this sense of the word, faith is the essential virtue of science, and likewise of any religion that is not self-deception. Faith has no preconceptions it is a plunge into the unknown. Faith, on the other hand, is an unreserved opening of the mind to the truth, whatever it may turn out to be. The believer will open his mind to the truth on the condition that it fits in with his preconceived ideas and wishes. Belief, as I use the word here, is the insistence that the truth is what one would “lief ” or wish it to be. We must here make a clear distinction between belief and faith, be- cause, in general practice, belief has come to mean a state of mind which is almost the opposite of faith. To explore the difference, let’s consider the insight of Alan Watts, a twentieth-century philosopher of Eastern religions who tried to capture the difference between faith and belief like this: Then, the journey into Harmony is a journey beyond beliefs into revolutionary love. The journey of doubt through Perplexity involves questioning not only specific beliefs but the whole belief system approach to faith. In other words, the journey of faith through Simplicity and Complexity involves learning and perfecting beliefs. Faith after doubt: it’s about revolutionary love. So, acknowledging my mixed feelings, I’d like to offer this pair of slogans to summarize the heart of our message so far:įaith before doubt: it’s about correct beliefs. But they’re pithy and memorable and therefore have some value. They often oversimplify and therefore mislead. I have all kinds of mixed feelings about slogans. See No Stranger: A Memoir and Manifesto of Revolutionary Love And when we think we have reached our limit, wonder is the act that returns us to love. Anger is the force that protects that which is loved. This labor engages all our emotions: Joy is the gift of love. If love is sweet labor, love can be taught, modeled, and practiced. Love is a form of sweet labor: fierce, bloody, imperfect, and life giving-a choice we make over and over again. Unfortunately most neurophysiology studies utilize visual working memory paradigms. In the last two decades there have been a wealth of neuroimaging studies in human subject and single-unit recording studies in non-human primates, which confirm a role in working memory for the prefrontal cortex ( Funahashi et al., 1993 Awh et al., 1996 McCarthy et al., 1996 Miller et al., 1996 Owen et al., 1996 Courtney et al., 1997 D'Esposito et al., 2000 Fuster et al., 2000 Bunge et al., 2003 Postle et al., 2003 Bor et al., 2004 Rowe et al., 2008). ![]() In contrast, lesions of VLPFC resulted in impaired performance in non-spatial tasks and implicated VLPFC in object recognition ( Mishkin and Manning, 1978). Later, more precise lesion studies implicated DLPFC in spatial and delay processes ( Malmo, 1942 Mishkin, 1957 Passingham, 1975 Mishkin and Manning, 1978). Early lesion studies indicated that lesions of prefrontal cortex caused impairments in delay response, delay spatial alternation, and delay object alternation tasks ( Pribram et al., 1952 Mishkin and Pribram, 1955, 1956 Pribram and Mishkin, 1956 Mishkin et al., 1969). The frontal lobe is well-known for its role in speech and language processes and executive functions that include working memory, planning, and decision making ( Fuster, 2008). Possible auditory functions and connections of frontal pole, medial and orbital areas of the frontal lobe are described elsewhere including Medalla and Barbas (2014). This review will focus on the lateral prefrontal cortex including the dorsolateral regions (DLPFC) (areas 8, 46, and 9) and the ventrolateral regions (VLPFC) (areas 12/47, 45, and 12 orbital) (Figure 1). The frontal cortex is a heterogeneous region with multiple functional subdivisions, including the prefrontal cortex, which lies in the anterior frontal lobe and consists of medial, lateral, and orbital subdivisions. Discerning what types of auditory information reaches the frontal cortex, where that auditory input originates, and how information is utilized by the frontal lobes for complex behaviors, such as communication, is a fundamental question of neuroscience. While this is apparent in the non-human primate and in some neuroimaging studies, most research in humans indicates that specific task conditions, stimuli or previous experience may bias the recruitment of specific prefrontal regions, suggesting a more flexible role for the frontal lobe during auditory cognition.Ĭonnections from the auditory cortex to the frontal lobes mediate a number of functions including language, object recognition and spatial localization. Past research suggests that dorsal and ventral subregions of the prefrontal cortex process different types of information with dorsal cortex processing spatial/visual information and ventral cortex processing non-spatial/auditory information. ![]() In humans, the frontal lobe is involved in auditory detection, discrimination, and working memory. In contrast, neuronal responses during auditory working memory involve a wider region of the prefrontal cortex. For example, recording studies in non-human primates indicate that VLPFC is responsive to complex sounds including vocalizations and that VLPFC neurons in area 12/47 respond to sounds with similar acoustic morphology. ![]() Neuronal responses reflect these anatomical projections as some prefrontal neurons exhibit responses to features in acoustic stimuli, while other neurons display task-related responses. In contrast, projections from the parabelt and the rostral superior temporal gyrus (STG) most likely convey more complex information and target a larger, widespread region of the prefrontal cortex. Afferents from the early part of the cortical auditory system, the auditory belt cortex, which are presumed to carry information regarding auditory features of sounds, project to only a few prefrontal regions and are most dense in the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC). Several areas of the frontal lobe receive afferents from both early and late auditory processing regions within the temporal lobe. The functional auditory system extends from the ears to the frontal lobes with successively more complex functions occurring as one ascends the hierarchy of the nervous system. The lists of recommended foods to eat or avoid for each ABO blood group are shown in the Appendix S1. Foods that are listed as “Neutral” were not included in the equation and do not contribute to the final score. Based on the food items listed in the ‘Blood-Type’ diets, subjects received one positive point for consuming one serving of each recommended food item and one negative point for consuming one serving of an item on the list of foods to avoid. In order to quantify the adherence to each of the four ‘Blood-Type’ diets, four different diet scores were given to each subject regardless of his or her own blood group. Subject responses to the individual foods were converted into daily number of servings for each item. Briefly, each subject was given instructions on how to complete the FFQ by using visual aids of portion sizes to improve the measurement of self-reported food intake. Considering the lack of scientific evidence and the popularity of the ‘Blood-Type’ diet, the objective of this study was to determine the association between ‘Blood-Type’ diets and biomarkers of cardiometabolic health and whether an individual's ABO genotype modifies any associations.ĭietary intake was assessed by a one-month, Toronto-modified Willet 196-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) as described previously. A recent systematic review concluded that no evidence exists to support the proposed health benefits of ‘Blood-Type’ diets. ![]() However, little is known about whether the ABO blood group modifies an individual's response to diet. These findings demonstrate the potential importance of the ABO blood group in altering risk of disease, including cardiometabolic disease. Furthermore, group B individuals were found to have lower levels of E-selectin and a lower risk of type 2 diabetes compared to group O. ![]() Regarding cardiometabolic diseases, individuals with blood group O were found to have lower levels of von Willebrand factor (VWF) and had a reduced risk of venous thromboembolism compared to the other blood groups. As one of the first recognizable genetic variants in humans, the ABO blood group has been studied extensively for its association with a variety of diseases including cancer, ,, , malaria, and cholera. The ABO blood group is a classification of blood based on the structural variation of a certain carbohydrate antigenic substance on red blood cells. The ‘Blood-Type’ diet also proposes that lectins, which are sugar-binding proteins found in certain foods, could cause agglutination if they are not compatible with an individual's ABO blood group. Finally, individuals with an AB blood group are believed to benefit from a diet that is intermediate to those proposed for group A and group B. Following the same rationale, individuals with blood group B are considered to benefit from consumption of dairy products because this blood group was believed to originate in nomadic tribes. In contrast, those with group A should thrive on a vegetarian diet as this blood group was believed to have evolved when humans settled down into agrarian societies. Based on the ‘Blood-Type’ diet theory, group O is considered the ancestral blood group in humans so their optimal diet should resemble the high animal protein diets typical of the hunter-gatherer era. ![]() D'Adamo postulates that the ABO blood group reveals the dietary habits of our ancestors and adherence to a diet specific to one's blood group can improve health and decrease risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease. The ‘Blood-Type’ diets have gained widespread attention from the public with more than 7 million copies sold in over 60 languages, and making the New York Times bestseller list. D'Adamo in his book “ Eat Right For Your Type” published in 1996. A link between ABO blood group and diet was proposed by P.J. |
